The Anna Lindh Foundation is the first institution of establishing the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership which was created by the 37 member states. Founded in November 2004 and is funded jointly by the 37 member states of the Cooperation with the financial aid of the European Commission. Essentially was created to promote the spiritual, social and cultural dialogue between the participating countries and the adoption of behavior of hospitality and respect.
Moreover, this is the first Euro-Mediterranean institution located out of EU, having its headquarter in Egypt. Specifically, the Foundation is housed in the Library of Alexandria and the Swedish Institute. The main objective of this initiative is to bring together people and organizations from the two sides of the Mediterranean, focusing on people's development through education and training.
However, throughout this process, the dialogue is not the main goal itself but a means to combat racism, xenophobia and all forms of discrimination, from wherever it comes. Through dialogue, the Foundation aims to ensure the defense of freedom of expression, respect for human rights and the principles that defend the members and groups of these societies.
The youth as a social group, education of young people and immigrants are priorities in the planning of the Anna Lindh Foundation.
The Foundation acts as Network of Networks of 37 National Networks. Members of these networks can be non-governmental organizations and other cultural institutions interested in the objectives of the Foundation and be active in the following areas:
- Literature and arts
- cultural heritage
- Democratisation, Human, rights and the role of women in society
- Education and communication
- Scientific research
- The environment and sustainable development
To better serve its objectives, seeks to work closely with the local authorities, the media and with other private and governmental cultural institutions.
The role of National Networks are particularly important. For this reason, the Anna Lindh Foundation gives special importance to the proper and efficient operation.
